Job Description

The Legal Assistant works closely with the attorneys in Rubicon’s Comprehensive Program and the Holistic Intervention Partnership to provide legal, administrative, and programmatic support in all facets of the legal services program. The Comprehensive Program provides participants with the necessary tools to overcome substantial barriers, providing coaching and experiential opportunities that prepare them for intensive employment training, family-sustaining careers, and a living-wage income.The Holistic Intervention Partnership is a collaboration of county and nonprofit agencies led by the Contra Costa Public Defender intended to improve individual outcomes and reduce criminal legal involvement for indigent Contra Costa residents with mental illness and/or substance dependence who have been arrested for misdemeanors or “wobblers.” Rubicon’s Legal Services serves approximately 300 individuals each year. For most, the immediate goal is securing employment to stabilize income. Rubicon’s integrated legal services address legal barriers that may otherwise impede participants’ access to jobs, housing or reintegration into the community. Over 70% of participants have a history of incarceration, many have been recently released and are still on probation. Rubicon provides civil legal services in multiple areas of law, including family law, housing law, criminal record remedies, vehicle and professional licensure, and employment. Many clients served through the program are mono-lingual Spanish-speaking individuals.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain consistent, regular communication with new referrals and clients; conduct intake, schedule, and calendar appointments, collect documentation, and follow up with clients on documentation requests.
  • Provide interpretation, when needed for Spanish-speaking clients; secure translation/interpretation services for non-English/Spanish-speaking clients, when needed.
  • File documents with the courts including e-filing, and ensure service of legal documents and correspondence.
  • Assist with administrative and clerical duties such as calendaring, copying, and filing; update cases.
  • Enter client demographics and other information into multiple databases; Enter and update data to support program evaluation, outcome tracking, and grant reporting.
  • Under attorney supervision, complete forms and documents required by courts, administrative bodies, or other entities in the course of representation.
  • Participate in meetings with the Public Defender’s office and other partners.

Experience and Requirements

  • Strong ability to build relationships and communicate with diverse audiences
  • Experience in providing administrative and legal support services, or other equivalent experience
  • Strong organization, writing, and communication skills; familiarity with data base systems such as Salesforce
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with other Rubicon teams and divisions; government agencies, and partner organizations.
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, and Cultural Responsiveness

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • $52,000-$61,000/year.
