About the role:
- Serve as the Disease Area Translation Medicine Lead (DA-TML) for the Epilepsy Disease Unit (EDU), developing a cross-program translational strategy with the clinical and biology co-leads
- Serve as Project TML on Global Project Teams (GPT) for the EDU and other clinical programs, including TAK-611, TAK-141, and TAK-925 (as needed)
- Lead Translational Subteams (TSTs) of GPTs to develop Translational Medicine Plans (TMPs) as informed by the overall Asset Strategy
- Act as a key interface between NS Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) scientists and Therapeutic Area Unit (TAU) clinicians to ensure portfolio prioritization and seamless transition of programs between research and clinical development
- Drive projects to rigorous assessments of therapeutic success or failure by testing clear scientific hypotheses as early, leanly, directly, and quickly as possible in the preclinical, translational, and experimental medicine stages of development
- Design and implement clinical protocols for Experimental Medicine studies to test novel biomarkers and study designs in order to support earlier decision-making in development
- Engage early (at Project Start) with NS biotech unit scientist to design an overall program translational strategy and develop biomarkers to support the asset lead optimization and candidate selection milestones, including molecular, imaging, and electrophysiological biomarker modalities
- Lead authorship and drive development of the TMP, integrating input from other functions as needed, including Basic Research, Clinical Science, DMPK, Toxicology, Biomarker Science and Technology, Imaging, Quantitative Clinical Pharmacology, and other partners
- Contributes to authorship, review and approval of other key documents, including investigator brochures and INDs/CTAs as needed as well as co-authored publications in scientific journals
- Ensures agile, timely management of issues arising from ongoing studies, including serving as the study physician for adverse event reporting
- Uses enterprise mindset with a broad view across the portfolio that informs resourcing and prioritization of programs under direct remit
- Significantly contribute to the development of organizational culture and capabilities
- Contributes to continual deepening of domain expertise through external network
development; evaluates new opportunities in partnership with business development
- May function as project team leader, or provide oversight to PTL’s or key project team

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
- PhD degree in a scientific discipline with 10+ years experience with substantial clinical experience , or MD with 8-10 years of relevant experience with substantial research experience
- At least 5 years of translational/ experimental medicine experience
- Rigorous record of scientific publication is required
- Distinctive ability to engage in discourse on innovative drug discovery from early preclinical through to late-stage development
- Experience with epilepsy drug development is highly beneficial
